The staff is friendly and helpful. However, if you need to ask questions plan on your trip taking some time. Usually I have to wait for help while the staff is in lengthy conversations with other people. Usually it's worth the wait and I get helpful tips and stories when it's my turn.
If you need to get in and out quick to get back to your project this is the place. Skip the blue and orange big box stores and come here. Thier prices are higher but the service is invaluable. They have a friendly and courteous staff. Recently they have added a complete line of Stihl products. It seems they are always trying to make the store fresh with new displays and product. It can be fun store to browse if you have the time.
HOWEVER: Do not buy your paint here if you need them to make a color for you. I have tried several times over the years and they have NEVER gotten a color right for me, even when it's being mixed from one of their own samples! Want eggshell finish? They'll give you flat. Want "Limesicle?" They'll give you "Minced Onion." Want sage green? It's electric seafoam for you! I am really not sure why I keep trying; Sherwin-Williams is right down the street, comparably priced, and gets it right every time.
Westlake ACE hardware in Shawnee, KS can't be beat for hardware. Unlike the big box stores, you can still purchase individual fasteners instead of having to buy the jumbo box. (You know, the expensive jumbo box that the big box stores won't let you open to see if it's REALLY what you need?) Hardware staff is very helpful and will help you find that weird connector or bolt you need. Also they have some of the best deals on furnace filters, even cheaper than the big box stores. Staff always has a friendly "hello" when you enter.
Bottom line: As long as you avoid the paint department, this is a great hardware store.
The staff is very helpful and the prices are decent. They do have a problem with checking people out quickly, sometimes the lines can stack up while a single cashier takes their sweet time on the phone before taking our money.
